Extending Communication Beyond the Vehicle
Technologies such as gRPC provide an effective foundation for structured communication between software components inside the vehicle. But once communication crosses the vehicle boundary and moves across cellular networks into cloud infrastructure, the requirements begin to change.
We’ll explore how automotive teams can account for those differences without forcing a single communication model across every layer of the architecture.
Keeping Data Moving Through Intermittent Connectivity
Vehicles regularly move through areas where network connectivity may be limited or unavailable.
Vehicle-to-cloud systems need to account for temporary disconnects, variable latency, and changing network conditions. MQTT provides asynchronous messaging, persistent sessions, and delivery mechanisms designed for environments where connections are not always predictable or continuously available.
Distributing Vehicle Data Across Applications
Vehicle data rarely has only one destination.
The same information may need to support diagnostics, fleet management, analytics, AI, digital twins, monitoring, and other cloud applications. Publish-subscribe messaging helps decouple data producers from consumers so vehicle data can serve multiple applications without creating tightly coupled point-to-point integrations.
Bringing MQTT and gRPC Together
The architectural choice does not have to be MQTT or gRPC.
Each can serve a different role within a connected vehicle architecture. gRPC can support structured service-to-service communication, while MQTT can provide a lightweight, stateful messaging layer for moving data between vehicles, edge infrastructure, and cloud applications.
EMQ is also contributing to this area through FlowSDK, including an open-source MQTT-over-gRPC relay that gives developers a practical way to explore how the two communication models can work together.
